From what we read (including from the American Dental Association), you should start some kind of brushing this as soon as baby starts teething, but toothpaste seems optional for infants. The finger brush has served so many purposes including: 1) makes it easy to brush teeth and gums, which also relaxes him before bed, 2) temporary fix to crying baby in the car, 3) easy way to massage gums during teething especially after they get their first sharp teeth, 4) helps his ears on a plane and driving in high altitudes.... I think this especially helped my baby because he will not take a pacifier and will rarely take a bottle (especially from me). It has worked better for me than a lot of teethers because he likes my finger and I can control it so he doesn't just spit it out or throw it.
