Shank is softer than my Ariats, but sole is softer and different composition. The heel is part of the sole, so quiet on hard surfaces. Great looking leather work and stitching. These are more a "fashion" boot suitable for daily city slicker wear and NOT resoleable. Watch the fitment videos, I needed a half size smaller than my usual shoe size, just like Justin recommended.Warning: The tag on the boots shows a top layer, like an orthotic insole-it depicts the bottom of the insole and the cushioned layer your foot contacts is actually the tan layer, which is shown as the second layer. I exchanged two pairs, one because I needed a half size smaller and the second because I thought the boots were missing the blue orthotic insole. Closer examination revealed nothing wrong with the third pair received, likewise with that second pair I returned, so I called Justin to explain the confusing tag depiction of their insole construction.Amazon.com Customer Service was exceptional and the returns were both my fault for not knowing proper fitment first, and not understanding the tag depiction of the layers of the insole.Thank you, Amazon! Justin boots are absolutely incredible and I loved these right out of the box. I wear these boots as often as possible and they are by far my favorite pair of shoes I own. Incredibly comfortable and they didn't take long to break in. Most other boots take a good long while, but these broke in quickly. The color is right on in the picture but keep in mind these are square towed boots and the first picture looks a little more rounded. The leather is high quality and the stitching is really well done.
