Speed 1 is good for about 1.5 mph in calmer water, but the boat handles best in 2 or 3. Battery life was very good. After 2 hours on the lake, the battery gauge was in the yellow (actually about 80% charge when I placed the battery on the charger). About a third of that was spent racing along at top speed. A more conservative pace will easliy make a battery last a whole day. If you own a Mariner 3 (or any Intex boat), this motor is much better than paddling. Overall materials quality is better than I expected given the low price. The handle and mount are made of plastic, but are rigid and operate smoothly. We have used this trolling motor 7 years quite heavily. It is durable and reliable. We have hit rocks, accidentally, without damage to the propeller. No rust or issues. All original parts. It’s quiet and strong enough to push the raft with 4 adults not only in calm waters, but also stormy waves. I just wish the excursion 5 was just as durable.
