It is individually forged and heat treated by a master blacksmith from stainless steel to eliminate the chance of rusting or corrosion. Unlike Western hoes, the blade is designed with a slightly curved surface so that it cuts from the center to the outside of the blade. This improves the cutting effect and helps prevent damage to adjacent foliage. The pick end will rapidly break up hard soils. Both ends are installed angled to the handle to reduce fatigue during use. The handle is made from hard wood. The blade end is 2-1/8" W x 3" L, and the pick end is 3-3/4" L. I would not want the wedge out so I seated the handle and drove the wedge in and cracked the handle. The people at Woodcraft say the wedge does not need to be in for the handle to be okay. I still think it is odd to have the wedge and handle like that with no instructions to leave it as is.Woodcraft graciously offered a replacement tool but they are out of stock until August. With a new one I would remove the supplied wedge, seat the handle and drive in a much smaller wedge.
