## Description

desertcart.com In recent years, rotary cutout tools have soared in popularity, due mainly to a series of television infomercials promoting one brand. Though it doesn't receive the TV airplay of its main competitor, this DeWalt model uses a durable 5 amp motor--the most powerful motor yet in a cutout tool--making it a great tool for professional drywallers, electricians, and carpenters. To help battle dust infiltration, the tool features a sealed motor and switch, a must for any serious drywall tool. It also sports a quick-and-easy, tool-free bit-changing system and comes with both 1/8 and 1/4 inch collets. We really like the bump-off switch for quick tool shutdown and the simple and effective tool-free depth adjustments. Like other rotary cutout tools, this one uses spiral cutting bits, which work equally well plunging into a cut as they do laterally. In our test we found the DeWalt to be smooth running with low vibration. We had no problem plunging and cutting through 1-1/2 inches of solid birch, whizzing through drywall, and tearing through tile. In fact, this tool has more power than you'd expect from something of its size, and if you aren't paying attention, it can get away from you--an easier to live with problem than lack of power. Some extraordinary claims have been made about rotary cutout tools, and while DeWalt's cutout tool is as versatile as any we've tried, and a bit more powerful than most, it's most effective at what it was designed for--quick cutouts in drywall, tile, and plywood. --Brian Trinen Product Description The DW660 Cut-Out Tool has a powerful 5.0 Amp, 30,000 rpm motor with a slim design and durable construction. Review: dewalt dw660 rotary tool - Excellent impressive tool -- but I expected this from DeWalt and I wasn't disappointed. Years ago I had purchased a rotozip brand tool and it burned out on first use. I had to finish what I was doing with a regular single speed Dremel Tool. So I was turned off by rotary tools. However I had a lot of cutout work to do -- carpenters lace type trim work for the porch and gable trim. I hate a scroll saw because of the pain of having to unhook and rehook the blade every time you start to cut in a new area; and I did not want to pay the expense of a band saw; I just would not use it often enough to justify and my jig saw just wasn't maneuverable enough in tight patterns. So I went to desertcart and asked for rotary saws to see what was out there and BAM -- there it was DeWalt! I don't care what anyone else says I LOVE DeWalt tools; they have never let me down. From my 10" table saw; 10" compound Miter saw; drills; sanders; planner; table router; trim router and now rotary saw my DeWalt tools have always served me well. This rotary saw cut through 3/4" hardwood and 3/4" treated exterior pine plywood -- yes folks, like a hot knife through butter. With the first cut I knew I had hit the jack-pot. There was no strain on the tool, it handled the wood effortlessly, and I had no trouble controlling it as I cut freehanded through the wood. The ring guide kept the blade perpendicular to the wood and the cuts were clean and smooth. I cut a lot of scallops; circles; scrolls; curls and whatnots through several pieces of 7 - 8 foot long boards and with this saw I did it fast. I bought just the saw because I did not know if it would work but I would advise people to also purchase the D-handle attachment you can get for it. I think it would make holding the tool more comfortable; especially if you are doing a lot of cutting. By the time I was finished I had cramps in my fingers for several days. And that is the ONLY complaint I have. I realize 7 foot long boards would have been very cumbersome to maneuver through a scroll saw or even a band saw and a jig saw just would have taken way too long. I did my whole project in one 2-day weekend. Thank you DeWalt! Thank you desertcart for getting it to me in less than 4 days! Oh and I forgot to mention, I am a 52 year old woman and I am proudly a woodworker with 23 years experience at the craft! So stand back -- look out -- I'm on fire now. When I get done the neighborhood will never be the same!
Review: I really wanted to like this tool... (Revised review and rating) - OLD REVIEW, FROM APRIL 3, 2013 I had high hopes for this tool but, alas, I had to return it. To begin with, it kept losing the bit while cutting, which made it annoying to use and potentially dangerous. I assume I could have worked on this issue by tightening it with a wrench, but there was another, much more concerning issue: it was burning the plywood (!). As I was trying to cut a rectangle in a piece of plywood in my attic, I quickly noticed that smoke was coming out of the plywood. I decided to stop using this tool altogether when I saw the first amber on the wood. I can't work with a tool that could potentially cause a fire in my house -- not worth for one, two, or a dozen rectangles in my plywood. Sadly, this tool is back in the desertcart box and will be returned soon... REVISED REVIEW, SEPTEMBER 6, 2014 I recently re-purchased this tool (I had returned the one purchased last year). I intended to use it on sheetrock this time, a seemingly more appropriate use than that of my original attempt last year. I must say that I am very impressed. I was able to cut a perfect rectangle for my electric box with virtually no effort and almost no mess. Considering that this was my first attempt, I was really happy with my experience. This tool works just great, only not on any material. Plywood certainly is not in the list of materials it can cut through, but it can certainly cut through sheetrock like butter. This time I'll keep it!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this tool good enough for cutting into plywood and at what thickness?**
A: Hello Angel. Yes. I cut through 3/4" thick TREATED plywood, which is a really dense and heavy plywood because of all the chemicals in it. Treated plywood also tends to hold more moisture than regular plywood, at times it even feels damp to the touch, and two sheets stacked together with out some kind of divider between them will actually "sweat". So I really thought I would have had a problem cutting it, but this tool did great. Just make sure you use the cutter that is specifically for wood. With the correct bit you should be able to cut through any thickness of plywood. Hardwood may cause problems if you cut anything thicker than 3/4". I have not tried it in a full 1" thick hardwood board; as I have only cut ply. Just take your time, don't rush the cuts and clean them out often if you are making thin and curved cuts. If there is a high moisture content in the ply, the sawdust will build up in the cuts. I just repass the bit along the inside of the cut and the spinning bit can be used to clean the area. Please protect your eyes, wear goggles -- I tend to lean down really close to the area as I cut as my eyes are old and getting bad! Good luck with your project -- oh and this tool can be used just like a small dremmel brand tool. I needed to cut some really big nails out of some old wood and I tried one of my metal cutting disk from my dremmel and it worked great. So you can use this for a lot of different things.

**Q: Can this tool be controlled to cut a fairly straight line / groove in a piece of wood, like a router?**
A: Not really. You would be better off with a router. Routers will give you more options for bits and the fences are meant to guide along a straight edge. This tool is for rough plunge cuts (holes in drywall).

**Q: Will this cut through plaster and Lathe walls? If so, what type of bit would I need?**
A: Hi Bro, I bought one of this; and cut perfectly plaster, drywall panels and similar consistence products. The bit that come with it, Works nicely. If you Desire cut another materials like tiles for example, you need another bit for that material. I hope that information be useful....

**Q: Is this a good choice for a DIY CNC machine?**
A: Absolutely, this is the equivalent of a small "Trim Router" that are often used in CNC and robotic wood and aluminum cutting apparatus. It is a well built cost efficient alternative to these "Routers", given that is can use 1/8" and 1/4" bits gives you plenty of cutter choices and takes the commonly found "Dremel" type bits as well as 1/4" carbide bits used for tougher materials. The only option I wish this tool had was a variable speed control. 30,000 RPM is fast for some bits and materials. However, if you choose the right bit for the job, use coolant and lubricants where applicable it should work fine. I used the Makita trim routers for my CNC setup and was very happy with my choice.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works well
*by M***S on May 18, 2016*

I have used RotoZips before but never owned one. I decided I needed something for a project, so I settled on this. I bought this being corded on purpose. It is nice because I don't have to swap out batteries, and saves a few bucks. AC motors tend to be more durable and powerful too. I run a heavy-duty extension cord from another room that I am not drywalling and barely notice the inconvenience. The depth gauge doesn't always stay in place, but works well enough. Be careful, this has a powerful motor considering it is designed for chewing through drywall. I was cutting around a receptacle box and it got away from me, cutting a bit too much. I later mudded over the gap so it is not the end of the world, but the result would have been better had I expected this thing to take off.
