## Overview

The Arkon Windshield Dashboard Car Mount is designed for seamless integration with your Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, Kindle Fire HD/HDX 7, Google Nexus 7, and other midsize tablets. Its spring-loaded holder allows for easy one-handed operation, while the robust suction cup ensures a secure fit even in challenging climates.

## Description

The SM517 robust windshield and dashboard car mount holds smartphones up to 5.2” tall, including the iPhone 5, 5S, 5C and all previous iPhone models (such as the 4S and 3G), LG Optimus G, Nokia Lumia 1020, and Motorola Moto X. It also holds midsize (7” screen size) tablets, including the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, Kindle Fire HD, and Google Nexus 7. This mount package includes Arkon’s Slim-Grip Universal Holder, a large-sized 80mm windshield suction car mount base with one-touch lever, and a circular 3M adhesive mounting disk (for optional dashboard mounting). The Slim-Grip’s spring-loaded mechanism makes it easy to insert or remove the tablet from the holder with one hand, yet still holds the device securely. Included with the holder are 8 support legs (4 short and 4 longer versions). The top and bottom adjustable-leg design of the Slim-Grip helps keep any side buttons and ports unobstructed. The recommended configuration for best performance for most devices is to use the 4 short legs on the top of the holder and the 4 long support legs on the bottom of the holder. The arm of the suction mount adjusts vertically and provides 360° rotation, giving you the ultimate flexibility in viewing the tablet from any angle. The 5” tall robust suction car mount with Slim-Grip holder can also be used as a dashboard mount. It’s a 2-in-1 tablet car mounting solution. For mounting tablets with larger than 7” screen size or for Samsung Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3 and Note 2, Galaxy Mega, LG G2, or Motorola Droid MAXX, Arkon recommends Model SM617, featuring the new Slim-Grip Ultra Universal Smartphone and Midsize Tablet Holder (also available from ).

Its a fairly sturdy product, but is somewhat of a compromise if you intend to use it with a phone too.

The unit seems pretty good. I bought this we the intention of being able to use my Nexus 7 to view TorqueApp but most of the time it will be used to hold my Nexus 5 for navigation duty. It looks like it will be decent mount for the Nexus 7, however, there are a few things I noticed that make it not as great for the Nexus 5.The good:1. Suction cup feels like it will rip your window out of the car if you were to pull hard enough.2. The mount is sturdy3. The spring loaded "fingers" seem to be easy enough to get devices in and out ofThe bad:1. The longer "fingers" that you need to fit larger phones and tables seem kind of weak. You can see them flex a good amount when you compress the springs to slide the phone in. Makes me a little nervous that some person trying to cram their phablet into it may break them or if I were to accidentally tug my power cord it might snap them off. Unfortunately it is not possible to use the shorter fingers for a phone the size of the nexus 5.2. The backing covers up the camera on my Nexus 5 and probably every other phone on the market. The backing plate that holds the fingers is too tall to fit a phone in sideways, like shown in the product image. Therefore, when you place the phone in the vertical orientation, the backing plate and/or fingers cover up the rear camera. I have used my Samsung S3 window mount to film driving many times without this issue. I don't think there is any phone in existence that would not have a problem in this mount except for maybe the largest of phablets with a camera positioned on the very edge. You can offset the phone to the side a bit to let the camera peek out around the side of the backing plate, but then i fear it is not supported well enough and may slip out.Summary:This is a well made product that seems fairly robust, but being that it is designed for tablets, it tends to be a compromise for phones. The product is marketed to tablets so this is not a fault, but it is something to be aware of if you will be using it for both.

South American offroading gave it a good workout.

I'm really impressed with this thing. I've used a few mounts of similar design by different manufacturers over the years. Most of those others were not used with a tablet, and many of them failed easily or after a bit of abuse. So I actually didn't expect much from this thing, but the price was low so I decided it was a low risk. At first, I played with the mount at my house, just trying to fix my Acer A100 7" tablet to an entertainment cabinet near my television while it was playing videos connected to my large television. This didn't really work because the suction mechanism really needs to have glass. Not even the highly glossy wood furniture was sufficient. This really isn't the fault of the mount, and if I was serious about using this mount in my living room this way regularly, I would install the included mounting disc that gives the mount a slick surface to make suction with. Next I used this on the windshield of my truck, but with my Samsung Epic 4G, and it was more than sufficient to hold the phone while I drove the 6 hours to Modesto from Long Beach, playing music and performing navigation along the way. Today, I am in Suriname, South America, where I used the mount in the back seat of a 4x4 pickup while we drove 8 hours from a small villiage on a very rough grated dirt road. The mount stayed quite securely attached to the window at all times, but the tablet did fall out of the mount a few times during really bumpy travel. It was easy to knock the tablet out of the mount if you bumped it with your arm, but if the road was smooth and you didn't bump it, it stayed very well. I was using the mount to hold the tablet in landscape mode, but I think the parts included allow you to hold it vertically as well. I can't say how long the mount will last, since I've only used it a total of 4 days, but so far I'm really happy with it.

Solid mount that works perfect for the Nexus 7 (2012 WiFi)

*by T***R on Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2013*

I bought this with the intentions of mounting my Asus Nexus 7 (2012 WiFi) Tablet in my car as a navigation device. The mount itself and the suction cup part of the mount are fantastic. This mount is solid and the suction cup holds on better than any suction cup that I have ever used. The spring loaded clips have enough tension to easily hold the table in place and I have never had my tablet slip out, or move at all at any point while driving with it. I will point out a few issued I did have with the mount one of which was the clips that come with it. My clips had a tendency to slide out the back, it just seems like a not perfect fit and definitely could be better but I very easily fixed the situation with a touch of crazy glue and have not had an issue since. My other problem was the sticky pad that comes with it is not probably ideal for hot vehicles with heavy devices. Specifically I used the sticky pad to stick on the dash of my vehicle and with the tablet mounted in it, in the hot sun was enough heat to get the tackiness of the pad to come loose and would find my tablet laying over after the end of the day. The sticky pad itself is well designed, is very solid, and the sticky foam on the bottom is from 3M so there is nothing cheap about this part. I would suggest that anyone looking to mount it in a vehicle to either mount it somewhere where the is not any sun or just skip the pad and use the suction cup on the glass. Overall for under 12 dollars it is a great mount that I would buy again if I needed a 2nd one.
