The hat is HARD. I've never owned a cowboy hat or wear hats in general so I do not know if the feel is normal but it is hard. The hat is constructed well and looks really nice. It is pretty small in the inside and is not big hair friendly. If I decide not wear it with this curly hair, I will have to pin it down to secure it in place. The ribbon and bedazzles are secure and do not lift from the hat, even after a little pulling. The strings are like those you find on the hood of a sweatshirt and are long but not long enough for an adult to use to secure the hat in my opinion, especially if the hat is elevated by hair. There is a mild sheen to the material. It feels like felt but with a hardened flat texture.
