I put them around the exterior of my home (rear, and one on each side) and put a brick on top of each just so they can't be moved easily. I check them quarterly to refresh the bait and I have not had a mouse problem since about a week after putting these up. They have a special key to open them so children can't get into them. They are holding up well, have survived bad weather and winter. Review: New and improved locking device is a win! - So I have one of the older versions of these boxes that uses the metal key that inserts to open the box, and I'm pretty sure you have to utilize 300lbs/in force to get that little key to actually work. Usually it also requires slipping and jabbing yourself in the gut with the key due to the terrible old design. The new design is excellent with a plastic key that inserts and can even stay connected to the box so you don't lose it. Works without jabbing yourself in the gut or straining. Functionally perfect. Killed every rat within a 3 house radius of mine. Even my neighbors complimented me for taking out the pack. Excellent value and if I didn't already have enough, I would buy more of this design. We have owls and would not want an owl to eat a poisoned rat. Big improvement in recent years. Bromethalin is a neurotoxin that kills quickly. Older rat baits were made of warfarin, a blood thinner, which took extended consumption of bait to kill a rat, leaving it vulnerable to prey birds/animals. Don't know any jaws-type device for rat bait boxes. **Q: Does this work for rats?** A: Yes, this is a solution for rats. It’s similar to the bait stations you find around the perimeters of large businesses such as Costco. There are posts inside to secure the bait so that rodents can only feed off of the bait; in other words they can’t carry it away. **Q: We live in urban area in converted warehouse condo the heat and drought has caused infestation what do I do?** A: I like these cause they are pet /animal friendly. However if you have a lot of lizard types these are probably not for you. They work great for rodents and the bait does attract them. Mine are outside so I can only tell by the refills if they like. Might be a little difficult for some people, but - on the plus - it's hard for those who shouldn't be in it to gain access. - Note: If you have no choice but to use a bait station, there is a method that will protect other animals whist still killing the mice: Mash up an inch or 2 of "W4W Mosquito Repellent Coil" (available from Amazon), and put it on a tomato half with some baking soda. Put it in this box, and it will eliminate the problem without using dangerous rat poisons (which will kill other animals and birds if they get ahold of the rat after they eat the poison). -Rats will eat W4W Repellent, but ants will not touch it. The rats will consume the tomato (and the baking soda - which kills them). So, you wont get an ant problem while trying to eliminate a rat/mouse problem. IMPORTANT: If you have the option, Amazon sells non-lethal traps that will catch the mice without killing them. This is a much better option if you have the ability to catch and release. It's much more humane than ANY poison, and I have a friend who stands by the bucket traps.
