So I would like to start off by saying the following.. I am so in love with LANE! What an amazing book from start to finish. I bought this book not knowing if I would like it or not, I took my chances.. good thing I did because I am definitely going to want to read this book for the rest of my life.Lane and Sadie meet under unfortunate times, as they both have an incurable disease (fictional disease I might add) but it’s so believable. These characters and their friends become a part of your life and you find yourself rooting for them. Books that are written in alternate points of views are definitely my thing, as you all may know. I am absolutely crazy over them! Both Sadie and Lane were described so well, like real teenagers of today’s modern times. The pop culture references were like a breath of fresh reality air, sucking me into this fictional world. I read a lot of “chick lit” but started adding some YA novels to my library a couple of years ago and have been lucky to find a few authors I really like. Robin is one of them. Maybe it’s the wisdom and insight that comes with middle-age perspective, but I don’t remember most of the YA books I read 35 yrs ago dealing with social and emotional issues so deeply. Though the plot is much more predictable than “The Beginning of Everything,” this book is another one of those winners. I especially love the underlying message for YA readers about the dangers of “judging a book by its cover” and making assumptions about people. I was afraid to read my old favorites for fear my apathy would ruin them, but Robyn Schneider is just as amazing as I remember.I got lost at Latham House. I got lost in Lane and Sadie. I sat at their table at lunch and danced in the woods and cried with them. Damn, this book is so good.
