He was able to swim with no problem. **Q: Is this coastguard approved?** A: It is not approved as a boat flotation device as it does not have head and neck support. It is a swim vest and it does that beautifully **Q: Will the extra large fit my 70lb son?** A: I am thinking it will. I got a vest for my 3 year old grandson and it isn't snug. It also doesn't have a strap to hold it from sliding up around his face and no way to adjust it to make it more snug. I think I would look into some that are adjustable and has a strap for holding it from sliding up. **Q: What’s the weight limit on the 1-3** A: I don't know about one from 1-3. The one I got was more for 3-5. I wouldn't think it would be good for a little bitty child. I highly recommend this life jacket to all my parent friends. It’s comfortable and easy to put on. My son loves it. He has never once been upset about wearing it. It’s great because it allows him to actually learn how to swim. He’s had one since he was a year old. He knows if he’s not wearing it or doesn’t swim to stay afloat he will sink. My youngest is 7 and still not the best at swimming. Needed something simple just for reassurance in deeper water in a pool. It's surprisingly hard to find a simple vest that zips for kids over the age of 6 or weighing over 55lbs that isn't a full blown coast gaurd approved life vest with buckles etc. And just for swimming pool use. This was one of about 3 options for her weight range the other ones the prints were hideous or almost seemed like a baby would wear the design. This had all the elements we wanted, my daughter doesn't mind wearing it just in case because its not huge, she can put it on/ take off by herself and it does help keep her afloat. Weight range I believe is 55-80 lbs so definetely designed for a slighlty older child. Fits nicely when she has it on, snug, not tight and not bulky like a life jacket ( she is 57 lbs and average height for her age) We just didn't need something crazy big for supervised swimming.
