Review: The Right Size, Materials, Format, and Layout for Me, and maybe for You too?? - I've had this NKJV SCR Bible in Premium Brown Goatskin Leather for near on a month, and I cannot express the least bit of disappointment with it. The goatskin leather is beautifully thick, especially when put next to an NASB Schuyler Stridon Bible I bought and had to return. That one had a very supple, even floppy, goatskin leather binding. The thicker, 36gsm paper makes it a joy to hold and flip through pages. The paper is also more opaque. And the somewhat creamy white makes it more pleasant to look at for extended periods, when compared to the stark white of the Stridon. The 10.5pt font is just right for my 35yo eyes, and the single column paragraph layout is the perfect compromise between a full-on reader's bible like the Bibliotheca ALV Bible set I have at home (which has no verse or chapter enumerations), and a verse-by-verse study bible (which makes reading a little disjointed from verse to verse). The double column look always makes me feel like I'm reading more of a textbook, than the Holy Word of God, which is made up of multiple genres of literature, not just referential information. Every book begins on a brand new page, and doesn't just add some white space between the previous and current books! I didn't realize I would miss that feature. And the additional aides (references, footnotes, concordance, maps) are more than good enough to do some quick study. Also, those ribbons have a great feel to them, and are plenty long. Finally, this is a size that I can bear to use at home, for study or devotions, or to read along while in church. If there's any changes I would make (but these don't hamper my enjoyment of this thoughtful presentation of the Word of the Lord), they would be these: 1. Separate the references and footnotes, with the references at the top, and the footnotes at the bottom 2. Make the verse numbers a bit more distinct, by maybe underlining or italicizing or coloring them. Or even making the size a tad bigger and a bit more separate from the actual text. (But this is a weakness across most SCR paragraph-style Bibles). 3. Include short book summaries as well! Other than that, as I'd initially said, there's next to nothing that I would change about this elegant and carefully-planned presentation of the God-Breathed Scriptures! I would recommend that anyone who enjoys reading the Word of God through the translational presentation of the NKJV strongly consider this Bible!!
Review: Beautiful edge-lined Bible! - I am a lay-teacher and got a little spoiled when I bought my first edge-lined Bible. How can you go back?! Those buttery soft covers that gently protect beautiful art-gilded pages…what’s not to like? Other than the price, of course. My edge-lined Bible collection began to grow with different translations as my family gifted me with these gems over the years. Having different translations is so helpful as a teacher, even though the quality of the Bible itself doesn’t matter. I got to the point where I had a couple of stacks of beautiful edge-lined Bibles, but one stood out. I had needed an NKJV at one point, so just purchased an inexpensive hardcover edition. The layout turned out to be one of my favorites for any Bible. It was, however, very ugly sitting on top of its edge-lined companions. I just couldn’t justify paying the price for a Bible printed and bound in the Netherlands that I rarely used, and I hated the thought of losing the layout I loved so much. So when I stumbled across this Bible, that uses the identical layout as my beloved hardcover at half the price of one from RJ, I decided to take the plunge. I’m glad I did! This one is well-made, with no faults anywhere. The weight of the paper is fine and each page is smooth and unwrinkled. The covers are soft and pliable, the gilding is evenly applied, there is no excess glue anywhere. The printing is even throughout, and it is straight on all of the pages. None of the red printing is out of place relative to the black. There are pictures of the layout, so I won’t comment on that, but I will say that having the sigla (small letters or numbers that indicate a footnote or cross reference) in red makes them far less distracting for a straight read in a reference Bible. I can’t put a finger on what is is that differentiates this Bible from the beauties from the Netherlands, but I will say, that for a less-used copy, pulled out mainly for reference, I couldn’t be happier.
