At least not for the one I received. The bulb wasn't a problem either. You just slip it down through the top and screw in. The lamp is pretty. I first used a 20W halogen bulb. Then I tried a 4W vintage retro style LED one. The yellowish glow from that made it all the prettier.

Very cool little lamp, especially when lit up. Looks a bit better on pictures and the little hanging glass bits can fall off quite easily so make sure you aren't lumbering it around too much, if it just chills in place then you probably will never lose any. If you do lose some it makes the lamp look silly.
