Shenk, who along with former broadcaster Chris Wheeler, is one of the club's "lifers," those who have spent the vast majority of their careers with the Phillies and who have witnessed the ups an downs of the club over the last 40+ years. Actually longer for Shenk, who joined the club in 1964 - a year that wound up perhaps the darkest in club history.The biggest takeaway theme of the Shenk book, all the more relevant given the struggles of the current iteration of the Phillies, is the critical importance of the scouting and player development functions, an aspect the Phillies struggle with currently, but has been the foundation of their success in the pennant years of the late 70s and early 2000's.But for those of us who are life members of Phillies nation, those fans who have suffered with and celebrated this team over the years, Shenk gives us many insider stories and anecdotes that provide color and perspective on what we witnessed from the stands.
