The 'Meteorite Men' show on the Science Channel has renewed my interest in astronomy and meteorites. So, I wanted a good source of up to date information. I searched Amazon pretty carefully and checked out many of the prospects from the library. 'Meteorites: A Journey Through Space and Time' was the best, by far, for me. It starts by stating "This book is written for people who are not scientists." And, definitely, those who are not scientists will thoroughly enjoy this book. However, if you are a scientist in a different field (or engineer, or technically inclined) you will get plenty of nitty-gritty scientific details. The coverage of topics was just what I wanted, the information is quite up to date (published in 2002 it does miss a few of the results from the recent probes) and the graphics are just outstanding. I just couldn't recommend this book any more emphatically.

I am a entomologist by profession and a bit short on geology related subjects. The text was purchased for a grandson interested in geology after we found what appears to be stony meteorite in the Nevada desert. The text is written in language that my grandson, a junior high school student, can understand. We have found "Meteorites" a useful reference as we probe deeper into our interesting stone and it's physical makeup.The authors are qualified professionals in the field.I have purchased 2 copies of "Meteorites". One book for my grandson, and one for my own bookshelf.

Book is in perfect condition. A very important scientific book from Britain (of course) with an American imprint (The Smithsonian). I found the date when the meteorites were reheated and melted, about 500 mya. Was this catastrophe due to impacts (as scientists claim), or from the explosion of a planet between Mars and Jupiter? Emphasis is upon the original rock chemistry plus the new chemistry resulting from catastrophe.
