I love using the distributor and the tamper. Once set for depth, you can get great consistency on your pulls. Helps to eliminate one variable. I set the depth on my tamp so that I give decently firm pressure for the ring to touch the portafilter. With a consistent grind, my tamping pressure is consistent as well. Works for me! My results were all over the place. Never consistent. Although I am still trying to nail down the correct tamping, shots now are consistent thanks to this distributor. This is actually the second distributor I have ordered; the first never made it to my front door. It was lost in the process.That gave me a chance to order this distributor (which had the added feature of having a tamping function as well).I must note though, I still use my hand tamper after the distributor part.
