It is a flat button 3volt CR2016 Lithium battery that goes in a chamber located at the top right corner of the board. You need a small Phillips screwdriver to open the chamber. Look for a tiny screw at the top and a "thumbprint" indentation along the top edge. It is very inconspicuous. **Q: Can you back up your notes as you erase them on the app? Will I be able to see what i wrote yesterday on the app and for how long is it stored?** A: 8.5 doesnt allow for sync. the only app available is call JOT which is just to take a picture of what you have drawn. after erase on the 8.5, nothing can be done to retrieve it back. **Q: After all of the negative reviews I'm afraid to buy. It's become my main sticky-note replacement for those 10 years of abuse, travel, boredom in meetings, and having different mounting methods in my notebooks. I've NOT been gentle to mine and it has still lasted this last decade! But, as you can see, the bleeding from the injuries is just getting so bad that I finally got replacements.They're great for the workplace where dry-erase boards get mucky, your marker dies, or you don't want to take the time to erase it.It's not just a "kid" item. I work in a place where you can't just bring your laptop or cell phone with you everywhere, and I hate using a whole page of a notebook for quick notes that I only need to remember long enough to type them up. So this is essential for me.---Which Item to get:I got one of the same older type, and one of the "newer" models, to compare them to each other, and I would definitely recommend the newer model.
