Originating from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, these sets are inspired by pieces dating back to the 12th century, showcasing the rich Viking heritage of the British Isles. Each replica set, meticulously crafted from crushed stone resin, mirrors the exquisite detail and artistic merit of the ancient originals, featuring the regal figures of kings, queens, bishops, knights, and rooks, each with its unique, expressive design reflective of the era. The precision in craftsmanship extends to the functionality of the pieces, each one carefully weighted and felted for a premium gaming experience. Modern enhancements include two additional queens per set, allowing for a full spectrum of play strategies. The chess pieces are designed to be used on a chess board of around 21 inches. The board is not included with this set. Accompanying the set is a collection of thoughtful inclusions: a leaflet that delves into the rich history of the Isle of Lewis chess pieces, a set of rules for newcomers or those seeking a refresher, and a cleaning cloth to preserve the set’s beauty. Elegantly packaged, it makes for a distinguished gift for those who appreciate historical significance, the art of chess, or exceptional craftsmanship. This set of chessmen is not merely a game but a bridge to the past, inviting players to partake in the timeless tales of strategy and valour. Review: Ideal for my chessboard - Bought this to replace an older, (now damaged), set of pieces which in turn I’d bought years ago to go with a stone chess board I’d picked up in a car boot sale. Delighted with these. They look like they were made for my board. There were cheaper options on desertcart, but felt I wanted something that looked high quality, and these do. Has two queens, (which is a rare bonus). Doesn’t come with a board obviously. Nicely packaged. It look’s amazing. I think the main differences are that the Regency set comes with 34 pieces (two extra Queens) and the National Museum of Scotland comes with 32 pieces. The dimensions of pieces in both of the sets are the same and they are both made from stone resin. As I say I own the official regency set but I am quite sure I would be happy with either. Hope this helps. **Q: We're the original Lewis men brown and white?** A: I understand that over 70 pieces from a number of incomplete sets were originally found. The colour had been bleached away on all pieces. A few had residual traces of red but that could also be part of a brown colour. I suggest you could query it with the maker of this set, but nevertheless they look pretty good anyway! **Q: How wide are individual pieces. Got 17x17 inch board. According to dimensions in here theyre 40cm wide each?** A: When choosing a board you have to allow for the broadest based piece which is the king, measuring 4.5 cms. I bought a 21 inch board for the set and it works perfectly. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ideal for my chessboard *by T***Y on 2 January 2023* Bought this to replace an older, (now damaged), set of pieces which in turn I’d bought years ago to go with a stone chess board I’d picked up in a car boot sale.
