Review: excellent potting soil amendment. - I ordered this product as an amendment to my potting mixture. I use about a cup to a bushel of soil. I hear many people say to add charcoal to "make the soil sweeter". This may or may not work, but the reason I use charcoal is as biochar. Charcoal absorbs nutrients when you fertilize the soil, then releases them over the course of time. The small chunks of charcoal also act as a drainage material, which is useful because I grow a lot of cacti and succulents. It is too fine to act as the main drainage ingredient. for that, I use 5 mm pumice or gravel. The grains of charcoal in the bag I got were approximately 1 millimeter diameter. I like this because it means that the charcoal is more evenly distributed through the soil mass. There was some dust in the bag because charcoal is relatively soft, and friction during shipping and handling generates some dust, but there was very little, and this is not a problem in a potting mix. I find it washes out with the first watering. Otherwise, the granules were pretty uniform in size. I have noticed that I no longer have fungus gnats since I started using charcoal in my mix. I also started using pumice at the same time, so I don't know which is the cause of the change. I highly recommend using this as an additive to your potting mix, whether you mix your own or use a bag mix. I have it on my list of essential ingredients. 2/28/21 update. The first time I ordered this, the particle size was about one millimeter. The second time the particles were about five millimeters. There seems to be a considerable variance in size. I ordered this so that we could divide it up, place large amounts of it in sheer pieces of fabric, and sew them up into little pillows filled with the activated charcoal. The idea being that you place them around the house near the litter boxes and they help absorb the odor from those boxes. I had read that this worked, and in fact it does. It's not a MIRACLE CURE, but there was an immediate and noticeable improvement in the air quality. It's a cheap, effective and completely natural way to deal with this issue that does not involve harsh chemicals of any kind. Believe the hype. It really works, or at least it did for us. **Q: Can this be used in an aquarium?**
A: Coconut shell based activated carbons are useful in tanks primarily for removal of chlorine and harmful chemicals in the water. The micro-pores in the coconut shell variety are smaller than the hardwood coal based variety (also called bituminous). Many aquarium users prefer bituminous (hardwood) based activated carbons as the larger contaminants will also be removed by the larger pore structure of this variety.     So basically if your main concern is chlorines, chlorides and chemicals, etc, then this coconut shell based carbon is a good choice. Otherwise bituminous based carbon is recommended.

**Q: I want to make my own room/refrigerator deodorizers.  Is this the stuff I need, please?**
A: Yes, you are correct. The carbon will remove the odor and contaminants from the air that comes in contact with it. This is why a shallow dish with a larger surface area is optimal. Stirring the carbon every few days will also help to make sure that fresh particles stay in contact with the air.

**Q: What material inside bag and cover material would i need to put the product in as a hanging room/closet/car deoderizer?**
A: Nylon stockings...just cut them...or nylon peds.

**Q: Can this be used with a charcoal filter for smoking a bong**
A: It depends on the type of filter and the mesh (screen) size of your screen material. This carbon is 8x16 mesh, which is about the size of coarse coffee grounds. If the holes in your retaining screen are too large, the carbon will pass through. If too small, it will limit the airflow. The proper size screen material for 8x16 carbon would be cheesecloth or even standard screen door material.    Are you using a commercial filter or a custom made filter? If you are using a commercial, what is the part / model number? I can check on this for you to determine the best carbon size for your application

My mom has a nasty old stinky house. It was a rental before my mom purchased it. 3 bedroom house with an additional 1 bedroom apartment that was built on before zoning laws restricted that. Great investment that we planned for her to live in for a couple years while we slowly remodeled it. We got the one bedroom rental fix-up. But, we had several major family issues and we just haven't been able to get the main house done. The carpet has years worth of dog pee on it, air conditioner leaked last year and the house just smells like death! We have tried everything we could think of to control the smell.
