Took a little practice, and it really likes "new" 9v batteries. It also has sort of a "sweet spot", which if you know where that is and learn how to use it to your advantage, will definitely allow you to find a hidden screw, rusty nail or topped-off staple in old pieces of 2" thick lumber I didn't try it on anything thicker as what I had was all all dimensional 2x wood, some of which was just slightly thicker than 2". I suspect a larger and more powerful "coil style" detector might be needed for 4" thick lumber, reclaimed heavy beams, etc, however with a little care this worked quite well with old hard yellow pine lumber in the 2" thick range. Found many old "pockets" as well where nails had long since rusted out, leaving behind iron dust, so I was able to gouge those clean before hitting them as well.
