I’ve used a lot of different mics for that purpose (414s, sm81, nt5s, etc.) and these have a certain character that requires me to do much less post production in terms of eq. I find myself only adding subtle compression when there are used as a stereo pair. They have a warm, natural glimmer that lacks the harshness of some of the other popular SDCs. Sure, they have no additional features like pads or rolloffs, but who needs those when you have a pair of Neumanns and aren’t trying to record loud stuff. I have used them for other things too: percussion, bowed stringed instruments, foley and even choral arrangements and quartets.
