The pH tests can be used to determine the acidity of the water. The KH test is used to determine the carbonate hardness. Toxic nitrogen compounds (nitrite) can be determined using the NO2 test while the NO3 test provides information about the nitrate value and thus the cause of algae. The NH3/NH4 test indicates non-toxic ammonium and the tables can also be used to determine toxic ammonia. In addition, oxygen content (O2 test), calcium content for healthy coral growth (Ca test), magnesium content (Mg test), the heavy metal Cu (Cu test), which is deadly for invertebrates, and the phosphate content as cause of algae (PO4 test) can be determined. The correct water values in the aquarium depend on the fish population and macroalgae. Even if the water looks clear it can be polluted. If the values are poor, diseases or unwanted algae can form in the aquarium. For a healthy aquarium with near-natural conditions it is important to check and adjust the water values regularly.
