Use the new wire to replace ALL of the shorted wire, even if it is not shorted down the wire, replace as much of it as possible. Use wire nuts rated for 220v.DO NOT OVERINSULATE OR USE ELECTRICAL TAPE, TOO MUCH PLASTIC WILL MELT AT 220V AND CAN CAUSE A FIRE HAZARD. WIRE NUTS ARE DESIGNED WITH FIRE RETARDANT MATERIAL TO PUT OUT THE SHORT CIRCUIT FIRE.- Also replace the contactor because it is cheap and it could also be defective from a short from the bad capacitor.- Clean the condenser coils and change your AC duct filter! A high amp draw from the dirty dirty condenser outside will run a compressor hot and eventually blow the capacitor and possibly the expensive compressor itself. Also, capacitors don't last forever! Average lifespan is aprox 3-6 years.- Check for leaks and find a cheap service call for ac with diagnostics included for $75 bucks to see if your refrigerant levels are low or high. The piping for these units often runs through areas of your home that you can't see. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fixed my HVAC problem and saved $$ - be sure to check for a reset button! *by C***K on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 30, 2018* I traced the problem to the capacitor and tested it after watching a YouTube video (Be careful they should be treated as LIVE all the time). I replaced it but my system still would not start... until I found the "reset" button on the lower panel of the unit. It had been tripped when the capacitor blew. My HVAC is kinda industrial and had this reset button, not sure if residential systems have this or not?
