## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this coffee oily? Did anyone use it for automatic espresso machine?**
A: 2 tips for running oily beans in super automatic espresso machines:

1. Alternate between oily and non-oily beans. My go-to bean is Starbucks espresso roast, but running just those beans will eventually build up a funk taste in the grinder because of the oil residue going rancid. To minimize that, I like to layer Espresso Roast with Starbucks Veranda blend (light brown, non-oily beans. The taste variations you get with varying blend ratios is quite nice! Sometime I use Starbucks Caffe Verona (another dark, oily bean) instead of or in addition to the Espresso roast.

2. When the funk taste arrives, I clean the super automatic grinder by running out all the beans and then running a product called Urnex Grindz. I see they now offer a version just for super-automatic machines, but I figured out a way to use their regular version in my DeLonghi machine. The product looks like light yellow coffee beans and is super moisture absorbent when ground and will mess up your machine if you run a full shot cycle with it (once water runs through it, it will expand greatly and can brake the machine). Instead, run through just the grind cycle and then IMMEDIATELY UNPLUG the machine when you hear the grinding stops and BEFORE it starts pumping the water through the compressed grounds in the diffuser. Plug the machine back in so it will reset the diffuser position and then turn the machine off. Remove the diffuser and clean up the diffuser and mess of ground Grindz powder. Repeat this process 3 or 4 times. Make sure it's extra clean before running beans through again. You might want to run several shots of a cheap coffee bean to fully clear it out because you can't get all the traces of it out of the grinder. It's non-toxic but even tiny traces of the Grindz left behind in the grinder will suck the flavor out the first several shots after cleaning. That will fade away as you continue to use the machine. Your espresso will start to taste wonderful again after this.

Since doing tip #1, I haven't had to do tip #2, but I will because I'm sure I'll notice an improved taste afterwards.

**Q: Are the beans fresh, shiny?**
A: When beans are shiny that usually means that they have been been roasted at high temps to make the bean darker. The moisture and oil comes out of the bean at that point

**Q: Are there articificial flavors in the Hazelnut Creme coffee?**
A: Hi, my name is Sarah from San Francisco Bay Coffee. While we use only natural flavoring in our organic line, we use both natural and artificial flavoring in our San Francisco Bay, flavored coffees. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at service@sfbcoffee.com.

**Q: Is your coffee gmo free?**
A: "Coffee has long been genetically modified since the late 1890's-1900's."

This is absurd. Hybridization and the genetic modification that takes place in a laboratory aren't even remotely close to the same thing. I know it's an old question, but this ridiculousness needs to be squashed whenever it rears it's ugly head.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not bad at all
*by P***E on September 3, 2023*

I’ve prepared this Scandinavian blend so far using my two main brew methods: moka pot and French press. It’s a tasty, full-bodied dark roast with smokey notes, though not nearly as smokey as a French roast. The beans are matte, not oily. I’ve brewed through half the bag already, and I’m still getting to know this blend. So far, I quite like it.Being a darker roast, I’ve been careful to grind even coarser than I would for lighter roasts in my French press, using a Timemore C2 hand grinder. Set on 26 clicks. Also, I let my electric kettle cool for a minute or two after boiling before I add the water to the grounds in the carafe. Boiling water is no bueno for darker roasts in a French press.I grind the beans a bit more coarsely for the moka pot as well.So far so good with this Scandinavian blend in both of my preferred brew methods. I’m enjoying it enough that I’ve also purchased the SF Bay French Roast and look forward to trying it.This brand sells a high value product. Decent quality for a good price. The expiration dates on both bags I’ve received are well into the future. Is this freshly roasted, small batch coffee? Absolutely not. I’m okay with this for the amount, price, and convenience. My goal here is to save money while getting a good enough coffee. This brand fits the bill.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Smooth and balanced
*by C***L on November 18, 2024*

I've been exploring different coffee blends lately and decided to give the Moka Java a try after hearing good things about this classic blend. I usually stick to more traditional roasts but wanted something a bit different, and this did not disappoint! The medium roast hits the sweet spot for me—not too light, not too dark. The flavor profile is smooth and balanced, with a delightful mix of chocolatey notes and a hint of fruitiness, which gives it a rich and slightly exotic taste. The beans are fresh and aromatic, filling the kitchen with an inviting scent when grinding.Overall, I'm really happy with this choice. It's a great, versatile coffee that works well for my morning cup or even a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. If you're looking to try something a bit different from your usual blend, this Moka Java is a solid option!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A bit darker than medium roast, but great for the price
*by J***G on May 14, 2020*

I worked roasting coffee for 6 years, so I have high standards without being a snob. This is review is for the Hawaiian blend. It’s labeled as medium roast, but is more on the dark side; I would consider it dark roast, but maybe compared to their darker roasts this is medium. Also I travel to Hawaii often, and would not consider this as good as actual Hawaiian beans. The beans had a bit of an oily sheen to them, which proves they’re fairly fresh (older, poorly stored beans will be dry in appearance). Beans also had a very nice aroma. Flavor is more like a dark roast, closer to a typical French roast with a deeper bite on the finish, than the smooth nuttiness of a more typical medium roast. I do personally prefer a lighter/medium roast, so I’m probably a bit more critical about this point.I removed one star for the roast being darker than what I would consider medium. Overall a decent bean, and nice cup of coffee. The most impressive part is the value; it is an awesome bag of coffee for the price. I would absolutely recommend to others, and will be purchasing from them again.
