## Questions & Answers

**Q: Would you have some recommended sma male connectors for this rg400 cable ?**
A: Well in my case I use SILVER 259 connectors because they work the best and also the SILVER reducers. If you buy the 259's Don't come with the reducers so you'll have to search them too.

**Q: what is power handling at ham hf freq?**
A: I generally only use RG400 for building short jumpers, RF chokes and baluns. I've run 5KW through these with no problem, but I'm not certain about the exact specification. I started using this after disassembling a DXE 5KW balun and saw that it is what they used.

**Q: What is the velocity factor of this coaxial cable?**
A: I'm not certain for this manufacturer, but almost all RG400 is around 70% (±0.5%). I typically only use this for building indoor RF chokes, baluns and short jumpers. It will handle 5KW with no problem and is great for minimizing RFI.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent coax!
*by on Reviewed in the United States August 20, 2026*

RG400 has one massive advantage compared to "conventional" coax cables: The Teflon dielectric makes it impossible to botch the installation of a conventional solder on PL-259.Most conventional coax cable use solid or foam polyethylene dielectric that melts easier than I'd prefer, and that's easy to do when soldering the shield to the body of the connector. In order for the solder to properly adhere, the entire body of the connector must get fairly close to the solders melting point, and that heat softens PE dielectrics. If the connector is not properly immobilized, the center conductor can migrate through the softened dielectric, come into contact with the connector body - creating a short circuit that RUINS THE ENTIRE EFFORT.Since there are 4 shield soldering points, you pretty much have no choice but to move the coax around in order to gain access to the next point, so the probability of this failure is a good bit higher than zero. All of this becomes a non-issue with RG-400. Since it's dielectric is made of PTFE, there's no fear of melting or center conductor migration.I heat the body of the connector with a heat gun, get it good and hot, then quickly make precision solder joints using the 30 watt bench soldering iron. I've never once endured a center to shield shortRG-400 is the same size as RG-58. In addition to a superior dielectric, the center conductor is stranded and silver plated. Likewise, there are TWO layers of silver plated shielding. I use RG-400 jumpers on the test bench where I repair high power HF amps up to 2KW, and have never had any issues.FWIW: RG-142 is essentially the same, except the center conductor is silver plated solid, instead of stranded.I have not done a full loss assessment and characterization yet, but as best as I can tell it should be fine for HF work, though I suspect the losses of a 50 foot length would become pretty significant at VHF an higher. Again, that's a guess, not a tested assertion. Interestingly, finding detailed data for this coax has been rare, and sparse. If I can find some time, I'll add a screenshot from my VNA, hopefully sometime soon.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for the ham radio operator
*by on Reviewed in the United States September 11, 2026*

Used it to build a coaxial trap for my ham radio antenna. It was easy to strip the insulation and separate the braid and center conductor. I used about 6 feet to make the trap which leaves plenty to make a choke balun in the future. It is pretty springy and takes some creativity to keep it wound tightly but it’s of good quality and should have no problem handling 500 watts or more.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good quality, true RG-400 spec cable
*by on Reviewed in the United States June 22, 2026*

Worked perfect, pro tip: be sure to use the correct RG-400 compatible end connectors, others will work but will not make a tight crimp
