It is a nice shade of gold; shiny but not too gaudy. The front and back open up simultaneously when you push the button on top. Note that it doesn't open flat (each cover opens at a 90 degree angle) so trying to use the magnifier to read something is awkward. It is maneuverable if you need it for short things like reading a price tag or receipt total, though. When the back is open, you can view the lovely clockwork mechanism. It also comes in a nice presentation/storage box.Remember that the rule of thumb when you close the covers on watches like these is to push the button in first, close the covers and then release the button. Otherwise the latch gets worn down. Also, unlike old watches where you turn the winding mechanism back and forth to wind it, this one only gets wound in one direction. This actually DOES keep surprisingly accurate time, but we mostly bought it for its delightfully watchable movement, which is visible from both front and rear; also, both front and back crystals are protected by separate covers.
