It allows them to have a light on in their room for a short while after they go to get with fun shapes on the ceiling and changing colors. It can operate in timer mode so that it shuts off after a preset time. One of my kids likes to have only the "blue color" so she pushes the button till it stays the solid blue color vice cycling through all the colors.
