## Questions & Answers

**Q: What does this smell like? I bought phycox and it smelled way too strong of molasses. More like something you would feed a horse. Dog wouldn't touch them.**
A: My dog likes them. He is a Pom. mix about 20 lbs. Has floating knee disorder and they have helped. The smell is a little strong at first (like liver) but I have gotten use to the smell. Hope this helps.

**Q: my vet prescribed duralactine vanilla chewables for my 12 year old pom. are the ingred in the soft chews the same?**
A: My 16 year old Sheltie was on Duralactin tablets and Cosequin. Once I switched to the soft chews my vet said Cosequin was no longer needed.

**Q: Active ingredients?**
A: Hi, Karen, Per one 4.8g soft chew, which is said to "Help maintain healthy cartilage and joint function while managing inflammation", the container shows the listed active ingredients as:MicroLactin (a trademarked name for a dried milk protein*)..500mgGlucosamine HCl (marine source).....................................250mgMethylsulfonylmethane (MSM)..........................................200mgEicosapentaenoic Acid (Omega 3 - EPA)...............................15mgDocosahexaenoic Acid (Omega 3 - DHA)..............................10mgManganese........................................................................5mgZinc..................................................................................2mgVitamin E..........................................................................25IU *MicroLactin, a patented dried milk protein concentrate derived from hyperimmunized cows that contain factors that appear to block cytokines an inhibit neutrophil partcipation in the inflammatory response. Duralactin does not share the mechanism of action of any known drug and is not a cyclooxgenase (COX-1 or COX-2) inhibitor.Inactive ingredients are listed:Fish oil, hydrolyzed vegetable protein magnesium stearate, natural liver flavor, soybean oil, sucrose.Cautions: Safe use in pregnant animals or animals intended for breeding has not been proven.Consult with your veterinarian before using this product in animals with clotting disorders, being treated with anticoagulant medications; diabetes, or any metablic disorder causing hyperglycemia; history of urinary tract stones, known allergies to shellfish. If lameness worsens, discontinue use and contact your veterinarian.Administer during or after the animal has eaten to reduce incience of gastrointestinal upset. Personally, I love this product even though I don't understand half of what's in it....I know the feline version gave our 23 year old cat her 'jump' back so she could explore and enjoy areas we'd had to build ramps to so she could get up to them, and now our 65 lb oldest dog is enjoying being 'bouncy' again in anticipation of his walks with the other dogs.HOPE THAT HELPS!Rose

**Q: I see that the soft chews only have 500 mg of Microlactin whereas the chewable have 1000mg. Any comments or info?**
A: I gave my 10 lb. Min Pin 1 soft chew a day per my vets advice. Worked wonders for her.......relieved the pain for a lot of years til she passed from a brain tumor at age 15.

Natural Protocol to use in context...

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2013*

Complete "natural" arthritis protocol comments:Adequan (the leading arthritis injectable) is used sub cu off label (instead of IM) for arthritis in dogs, cats and horses. Since it's from bovine tracheas, Novartis, at this writing, has it on indefinite backorder and is rationing it. It pops on and off Amazon once in a while. The good news is that Kinetic (and several of their pharmacies) are planning on offering their (also off label) alternative (Ichon) on Amazon, including Amazon's leading pet - third party vet supplier-- KV supply. Just Google Kinetic Ichon for details.Ichon is the EXACT same molecule as adequan (I'm a molecular biologist) with the same bioavailability and structure. A lot of vets don't know this yet, but some do. It is labeled for surgical use in wounds, but due to the problems with adequan supply is being used by vets all over the world as a substitute. It is NOT a generic for adequan, but an off label substitute. Technically it is labeled a medical device. As you may know, Novartis got a very interesting and strange labeling for adequan-- for use by vets or "under veterinary instructions." Meaning, you CAN legally order it without a script if you've been trained in sub cu (even though it is labeled IM).As just an example (research this or check with your vet), our 80 pound arthritic Rottie ladybug gets 1.6 ml (or cc, same thing) once a week for a month, then once a month for maintenance (or what vets call "rescue") dosing. You use a 3cc (or ml) syringe with a 1/2 inch to 1", 22 gauge needle sub cu (under the skin). YouTube has dozens of videos on sub cu training, it's very easy.Best of all, adequan is about $70 to $80 a 5 ml vial (moot since you can rarely get it), and ichon is $15. For a year's full dose (at $50 a shot at the vet) your cost goes from $2,400 a year vet/adequan to about $180 a year DIY ichon! If you can't get needles online, Walgreens and Safeway will sell them to you, but not CVS. 22 gauge is way too big for human drug abuse so most pharmacists see you're doing it for your pet. Otherwise, if you're in the country, you can get them at a local feed, tractor, seed, farm, grain etc. supply store.Because these products are almost always combined with Rimadyl, Quick River, Glucosamine, Duralactin and Dasuquin, there are no really good clinical trials on either injectable-- covariate problems make it tough when part of a regimen and compassion precludes them alone -- but many vets online are praising one or both for outstanding results. If you want to use the WHOLE protocol for your arthritic pet (and it CAN work miracles, getting them another year or more of active life), below are those protocol items on Amazon. The only one that you usually can't find on Amazon is Quick River (a pain relief non NSAID herbal vs. Rimadyl), made by Kan essentials (Bing them):Duralactin:

Duralactin K9 Chew - 1000mg (180 tablets)

Dasuquin (get only the MSM version):

NutraMax 150 Count Dasuquin with MSM Soft Chews for Large Dogs

Rimadyl: 800 Pet meds sells it here on amazon, need a script.Glucosamine: Duralactin has it, if you inject it DO NOT combine it with adequan or ichon. If you want to fact check any of this review yourself, Bing ichon vs. adequan, or ask your vet, who will then google ichon vs. adequan. ;=)Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. There's something about the flavor of the liver soft chews that neither of my Chihuahuas like. Even when I try mixing it in their food they refuse to eat, and they are usually voracious eaters. I am very disappointed, since I would like to see them feeling better. Perhaps I will try ordering the capsules and try sprinkling it on their food

A life saver for our Poodle!!! (UPDATE: She doesn't love them anymore. New formula?)

*by H***R on Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2015*

UPDATE: I'm downgrading this because the formula must have changed in the last 12 months. This has made a difference for our poodle, but she used to love these, now we have to dress them up with cheese or pill-pockets. She turns her nose up at them now... Please go back to the old formula! We've been buying this for $64 from our vet. It has made a HUGE difference in our mini poodle's life! She is 11.5, and once again is spunky, hoppy, happy and playful! Seriously, it makes such a difference - we take this in combination with ZOOM chews (not available on Amazon, sadly, at this time.) Together these OTC supplements help her joints heal (she has knee cap issues and various joints that pop out from time to time), keeps the cartilage healthy, and the Zoom has a proprietary ingredient that works as an NSAID to further help with inflammation and pain. So together, (2 Duralactin chews, and 1/2 a ZOOM chew a day), make a HUGE difference in her life. We were happy to pay $64 for the 60 count, but on a whim I searched Amazon and WOO HOO, it's half price! It is the SAME brand, quality, freshness as what I bought at the vet (actually, the vet's current supply has an expiry 6 mos before Amazon's does...), but for less. So, DO I RECOMMEND THIS? HECK YES!!!
