A: air bubbles release the vacuum necessary for the pump to operate.

**Q: do the fanci water fountain light up**
A: Yes it does. Its a great buy and it has an on off switch if you would preffer the lights off.

**Q: Can you use colored water in the fountain?**
A: Yes, you can. Just make sure you rinse and clean thoroughly before storage. Vinegar and water, or a small amount of bleach and water ran through for a few minutes is all it takes.
