It cannot be treated with salve or ointment. The bag removes the urine from the pouch so it cannot back up and irritate. It also is very handy when attending a play, movie, lengthy airplane or automobile travel, etc. Medicare has decided it will not cover it as a convenience item. I guess not many of the have stomas to deal with..
