We have our window open during the day to let light in, and have the lights on 2 + hours in the evening before bedtime, so it DOES get light to charge, however i am not able to read the numbers with the lights off AND the worst part is that the hands of the clock are not even 'glow in the dark'; so even if I was able to read the numbers- I wouldn't be able to see what the hands are pointing to in order to see what time it is.
