Will they drip into an opening that is 2.75" wide?** A: I would not recommend it for that. The way the thing is designed, it would not seat properly into a 2.75" opening .. but you could do it if you held it up yourself. I have two of these, but if I had to do it over again, I'd choose the Melitta or a ceramic one from Starbucks. Both of those only have a single drip hole for slower drip and greater ground saturation, which is what you want for a great cup of coffee. This one has two holes .. which lets the water drip through too fast, in my opinion. **Q: How many holes does it have?** A: Just got one (size 2 red ceramic) . It has 4 holes. Too many. **Q: If I wanted to sit this on a thermal carafe, how big does the opening of the carafe need to be?** A: The handle sticks out a bit from the ring but starts at the same level, so I use it to support one side for almost an extra inch or so beyond the 4.625" inch maximum mentioned. I have placed mine on a container with a 5-inch opening and it fits due to the handle protruding at the same level as the ring. I wouldn't want it to be larger than that or it would not fit securely at all.
