Increasing Capacity Density by 50%. As petabyte (PB) growth continues to increase at a rapid pace, corporate and cloud data centers are under extreme pressure to improve the efficiency of storage. To address this data center challenge, HGST introduces Ultra star 7K6000, delivering up to 6TB of capacity in an industry-standard, 3.5-inch hard drive, for capacity-optimized enterprise applications. Ultra star 7K6000 provides 50% more capacity and 30% better power efficiency in terms of Watts per terabyte (W/TB) than its predecessor, Ultra star 7K4000. The 7K6000 is designed for all traditional and rapidly growing scale-out storage applications, including object, block and file storage architectures, providing huge capacity, the fastest 7,200 RPM performance and the best $/TB acquisition cost. Technology Innovation Improves Storage Efficiency. Ultra star 7K6000 also delivers greater storage efficiency through best-in-class performance, achieving up to 3X higher random write performance, thanks to HGST media cache architecture, a disk-based caching technology, which provides a large non-volatile cache on the disk. Media cache also allows for improved reliability and data integrity during unexpected power loss. Other performance-enhancing features include higher areal density for 25% faster sequential performance vs. 7K4000, and a 128MB cache buffer. The 7K6000 offers a 12Gb/s SAS (6Gb/s SATA) interface for easy integration into high performance data centers. As drive capacities increase, so does the time required to recover a failed drive in a RAID configuration. Ultra star 7K6000 helps protect data from unauthorized use by offering security and encryption options. Instant Secure Erase (ISE) models expedite drive redeployment and retirement. Review: Arrived in solid, but rigid packing. One small box nested in a bigger one in Matryoshka style. It was clearance between the two, so the small one bounces inside the bigger one like a dried hazelnut in a shell. No bubble wrap, foam or similar padding. The carriers drop or throw this boxes around without mercy. As the drive is heavy and fragile it could be easily damaged. I do not know if that is the case with mine, but the drive seems faulty. Extremely noisy like drives from 20 years ago. Periodically it buzzes like high rpm fan with a lot of vibration. The mounting screws, which I tightened reasonably well were loose after only 8 hours of operation because of the vibration. It is also restless without being solicited, the heads "scratch" all the time. It runs a bit hot for being idle, with the computer case completely open. I have many other drives, including 15 000 rpm SAS drives and 10 000 rpm Raptor drives, none makes this noises. The tests also show the drive had already 33 hours of use, where does it come from? Somebody's RMA? I wonder if it is a real HGST or a knockoff, I am not happy and going to return it. Seller was pretty good replacing it with new one. It is better, but still very noisy, If you like it quiet it will drive you crazy. It constantly scratches and buzzes. I disabled and even uninstalled it through device manager, no difference, it has its own mind. I ended buying a HDD switch to turn it off/on and use it as storage only. It is big and might be reliable, but super annoying.

Arrived in solid, but rigid packing. One small box nested in a bigger one in Matryoshka style.
