The answer is that the doormat is rough, of course, but not painful. I have noticed, however, that the doormat can be slow to dry (due to its thickness and density), and therefore might harbor some mold or odor if used in a damp shower room environment. I love this doormat otherwise, but probably wouldn't use it as a shower rug. **Q: Does this have a rubber back? I'd like to use it for my rabbit cage. It's a solid, plastic bottom and he needs traction.** A: No it does not have a rubber back. I got 2. One is for our front door and the other one the cats use. They love it. They are very thick, have a heavy weight to them, and are plain and classic. If you are into crafting, they take paint beautifully. Personally, I now like them plain or with just a simple black line around the top. I even use one in the garage outside the inner door into the house. This one lasts for years.
