There is a metal part on the back that is bendable and you simply put it through the bars to hang. It can also work in glass aquariums. I hope that makes sense. I wish I could include a picture to show you. **Q: Can this hold a 4oz water bottle?** A: Yes. I have a little plastic one that's 4 oz. **Q: What is the diameter?** A: It will hold a standard small animal water bottle. I think those are an 8 ounce bottle. **Q: Will it hook over the side of a glass or plastic cage? The picture looks like it can't and just has a hole to bolt it to a cage that has bars.** A: Yes. It has a bendable metal piece on its back to slide over bars and rims. I'm guessing that hole is for hooking it to an S hook in case the back doesn't work out. These ensure that the bottle stays secure, and keeps the animals from playing with the bottle out of curiosity and/or boredom, and consequently biting the bottom end of the bottle. I have had these last over 5 years. The metal strip used to bend over the tank edge can be carefully bent and rebels for different bottle height inside various tanks, and does not break off if not bent to form a crease in the metal. These are great for animals in tanks since finding bottles with ways to be fastened to the tank are hard to find. In a 100 gallon tank, you can hang these around the sides giving several animals their own drinking bottle. These will change low enough on a high 20 gallon, a 30 gallon up to a 100 gallon tank from my experience.
