This book covers the period of time from 590 C.E. (Common Era) until 1260 C.E. in Chinese History. Thus, this book deals with the armies of the Imperial Chinese government during the Sui (589 C.E. through 618 C.E.), Tang (618 C.E. until 907 C.E.), Liao (947 C.E. through 1125 C.E. and Sung (960 C.E. through 1260) Dynasties of China. China during this time was suffering through a series of civil wars. The Sui Dynasty reunified China in 581 C.E. However, even as the dynasties listed above followed one after another, the entire period of time was punctuated by brief periods of chaos and civil war. There was a period of time from 907 C.E. until 959 C.E. which is known as the period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. This was the period of time between the downfall of the Tang Dynasty and the reunification of China under the Sung dynasty.This book is very good reference for a reader while the reader is reading other books on Chinese history of the period from 590 C.E. until 1260 C.E. Like most other books published by Osprey Publishing Company, this book has a chronology of events of the period of time and has maps of China during the time under discussion. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Imperial Chinese Armies Volume 2 *by K***Y on Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2008* Firstly, I would ask the reader to pay no heed to the previous review that only gave this title two stars. This text is highly informative, readably covering the armies of Imperial China from Yang Chien's reunification of China to Kubilai Khan's final campaign against the Sung. The history of the Army is broken down by dynasty; each section examining the history, leaders, and weaponry of the dynastic armies. Military science (including siegecraft and artillery), military thought, and nine important battles are lastly dealt with. The battles section is particularly useful, as the author used specific campaigns to illustrate his points throughout the book.Like Christa Hook (one of my favorite Osprey artists), Michael Perry's artwork is often bashed on Amazon reviews. I never saw any of his work until I bought this book, but was not remotely disappointed. Though he may be no Angus McBride (but then again, who is?), his artwork is colorful and detailed; his individual subjects have realistic facial expressions, and the armor and clothing details are excellent.
