The addition of all the plastics pieces help keep the bars in the correct position without shifting. Other reviews mentioned that the plastic rectangular clips are extremely difficult to put in and required a wrench/torque. We had no issues, they went in very easily by hand. Take note that if the plastic piece is upside down it will require force. If it doesn’t go in easily, flip the piece around. Easy assembly and requires no experience. My 9 year old helped. Review: Exactly as advertised. - The bed does come in pieces and you do have to put everything together, but the tools needed to do that is included in the packaging. The assembly is easy enough that if you can put together a Billy bookshelf from Ikea or know how to bake a cake from a boxed package you should not have any trouble getting this thing together. I think these beds would work for you (another tall customer recommended them also). I did some measuring, and they are about 76" long and 38" wide. A regular twin mattress fits with room to spare on all sides. It's about 43" from the bottom frame to the top frame. While sitting up straight on the bottom bunk mattress, my daughter had 2-3 inches of head room above her (she's 5'10). The only issue for us is that it would be nice if our 7.5' textured ceilings were higher for my daughter on the top bunk. She scraped her knuckles the first night. Just takes getting used to.
