This 1x30 is very much like Delta used to make them 30 years ago. RIKON does have some hit and some miss now and then, but this belt sander is just very cool and well designed machine. The safety is there – you can ask 90 year old to sharpen lawn mover blade or 9 year old to sharpen a pencil on this thing. You can get 1x30 belts and 5” replacement disc in many grades real cheap and good quality as well. Review: Best Bang for your Buck! - Although I gave this sander 5 stars, I really only wanted to give it 4 and 1/2. It was easy to assemble however the Platen on mine was not bent properly and was off (Vertically) by abut 1/8 inch so I had to take it apart and shim it. After set up and being concerned about it having enough power, I was pleasantly surprised that it has plenty. Pushed some hardwood into the belt with quite a bit of pressure and it did not bog down at all. I will let the abrasives do their job from here on in. Pros.. Well made and solid. Plenty of power. Easy set up. Cons are... Bent Platen Time consuming to change belts (2 knobs and 3 screws) All in all, I think it is worth the higher price over H.F. sanders and others which cost less and if I can find some finger screws it will make changing belts much easier. It's a keeper and will be fine for modifying and restoring knives and machetes especially when making handles. Edit 2/25/18 OK, I've been using this for awhile and on a couple projects that required me to change belts often as I reduced grit of the belts for finer sanding. I've found that it's easier to just remove the side cover and leave it off for faster belt changes. I am still very happy with this purchase and it's proven to be a real work horse.

**Q: Can you use this sander to sand metal if you buy the right sand paper or is it just for wood**
A: Yes you can use this sander to sand metal. I purchased this sander specifically to sharpen knifes and metal cutting tools, just make sure to use the right sand paper.

**Q: Is the motor loud when running with nothing being sanded? How would you compare it to a corded 3/8" drill?**
A: It's not the quietest sander but if I had to rate the noise level on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the quietest and 10 being the loudest, I would give it an 8 with just the motor running.

**Q: How powerful is it.  Does it bog down when putting moderate pressure against the belt or disk.  Also does it run true with little to no wobble?**
A: 1) With moderate pressure, it does not bog down. With heavy pressure it slows a bit, but I have not found that to be problematic. However, so you know, I use it with 1/2 in wide belts, so there would be a bit more drag with 1 in belts.  2) There is no significant wobble. It runs true. 3) The only problem I found was a slightly uneven platen, but I was able to bend it back true.

**Q: What material are the drive and idler wheels made of?**
A: They are made of injection molded thermoplastic, not rubber. I'd guess ABS plastic, though not sure. They are well formed and the larger drive wheel has radial reinforcement webs. They are certainly not fiber reinforced or a more exotic like Acetal (Delrin).

Although I gave this sander 5 stars, I really only wanted to give it 4 and 1/2. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A very good find for smaller-scale work. Bearing issues after a while.

I don't have too much room for a large stationary sander, and have been previously burned after paying $100 for a woefully underpowered 5" and wobbly sander made by another company. Thankfully, the Rikon sander proved to be a pleasant surprise: it's sturdy, well-made, easy to use, powerful, and it's more than you would expect for that price. It chews through hard woods and aluminum with ease; very little vibration, and the dust collection system is pretty good, too. My only minor gripe is that it takes some work to change belts: instead of some sort of a latch or a thumb screw, you have to undo three screws with a screwdriver. And if you don't tighten them back, the cover will be prone to coming off when you connect your vacuum cleaner to the port. As other reviewers have noted, there are two separate dust collection outlets. This complicates things a bit if you're putting together some sort of a permanent dust collection setup. But since I'm just connecting my vac when I need it, it's not a big deal for me. Edit: the sander has gotten increasingly loud after several months of intermittent use, to the point where you had to wear hearing protection just to turn it on. After some investigation, the culprit appear to be two low-quality 6202 bearings used for the smaller belt rollers. The bearings are very cheap to replace, although the middle roller is relatively difficult to disassemble.
