## Description

From the manufacturer

Review: Lovely sound - It's got some weight in it, which I like. The sound is amazing, as like a good base sound. Love the Alexa feature..
Review: Horribly crappy mandatory app to make it work, very heavy bass even with dialogue. - I have had this, and the little Denon 150 cousin, for just over couple of years now, and I have come to loathe both of them. I will say why though and if for you the reasons don't apply, then I'd give them a solid 3 stars as decent-ish but overpriced speakers. Starting with the faint-praise positives: As speakers they are average. Better than any budget speaker certainly (and better be at this price), but for something this expensive? Just okay. But the real let-down is how bass-heavy they are. This is the first point where my 1 star rating may become a 3 star for you. If you like lots of RnB, they'd be fine. Good even. But if you want anything with upper range - classical, Old School rock, or God help you spoken word like podcasts or audio books, the Denon range are NOT for you. Even average pitch male speaking voice has this unpleasant bass thump to it. A news reader or interviewee should not sound like he's MC'ing a rap show. Much of what I'm writing here is the same as on my Denon 150 review but for the 250 all of this is even more of a problem. The 250 is really suitable for parties. If you are having a party, this is a decent speaker for you. Hell, it's a good speaker for you - it's loud, powerful and can get the whole place shaking. But Good Lord if you want it for anything else, look elsewhere. If you're over 30 and you want something you can hear in the upper range like I did, this ain't it. Now here's the real kicker. The software/configuration. This thing was originally hard to set up without creating a "HEOS" account but you could do it, and once done and set up, you could forget about it. Denon retroactively pushed some kind of update to the point that your own speaker is now impossible logging into their app on the phone. Or seems to be. Maybe if you put an ethernet cable in the back you can play to it as a direct DNLA device. But who wants network cables everywhere? It forgets the Bluetooth connection repeatedly causing me to have to remove the connection from my phone every time and re-add it as a device. Which is slow because it seems to be designed to do that via the HEOS app. It takes something like two minutes to go into pairing mode, holding in the BT button at the back. This is true across their entire range. I recently bought a six-hundred quid AVR and the one thing I was absolutely adamant on when I talked to the guy in Richer Sounds, was that I will not buy anything by Denon ever again. Retroactively changing how your product works by pushing new updates over the Internet is not on. But I will add a specific minus for this product as well - the Bluetooth pairing button on the back of this has stopped working. It clicks, I don't think it's a mechanical fault (though could be), It just does nothing. The device will not go into Bluetooth pairing mode. It's their HEOS app or nothing. In short, I didn't get used to this thing's super heavy bass. I grew to hate it and will be trying to sell it and its little Denon 150 brother which I can still get to work but has many of the same problems. I want my review to be helpful though and say that if you want heavy bass, loud and are fine running the speaker in the way they want you to via their mandatory account requiring phone app, the rating is a 3. Not higher, because it's bad for the price, but it will do the job. This is very much a speaker for house parties. Not other purposes. I've left a very similar review on the Denon 150 because most of the same applies here. I'm not a lone complainant either. I have seen lots of other people complaining about how they retroactively made managing their speakers require their mandatory account sign-in and set-up as well. I'm happy to pay extra for quality. I'm not happy to pay extra for something that isn't better, though. People who have never bought an expensive speaker before though, will probably think it's good. It is way over-priced for its flaws.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ So glad I bought this
*by E***S on 18 March 2024*

I’ve been wanting to upgrade our DAB kitchen radio for some time and as we’ve already got a Denon CEOL mini Hifi (with HEOS), I wanted to add this to start creating a connected setup. This new addition did not disappoint, at all. Easy to setup and easy to create a connected system with our CEOL unit. The sound quality is also fantastic. I really recommend buying this if you’re considering it. It’s a fantastic bit of kit.
