Since we learned we're expecting, my husband and I have purchased several dozen picture books to read for fun and to transition into parenting.  We happened to come across this one while visiting New York, and we think it is one of the very best we have in our collection!  The story is sweet and clever, and the colors and pictures reveal something new on each read.  While I can't say for sure how our child will one day feel about the book, I'm pretty confident he'll like it too.  We've bought copies from Amazon for our other friends who are expecting, particularly those with some connection to New York City, since the book is set there and references the subway and different sites.

    Uncomfortable storyline

The illustrations are cute, and I love the book Please Bring Balloons, which is also by this author. But the storyline here bothered me. Blue says over and over that she is trying to find Egg's mother, and they travel around the city looking for her. They never find her, so Blue gives up and decides to keep Egg.Will kids make the leap to "if I get lost, I won't be able to find my mother and the person who's supposed to help will keep me"? No, maybe not. But the whole "the reason they can't find the mother is because Egg is actually a snowball and has no mother" idea might be beyond the grasp of very small kids too (it's never explicitly said that that's why they couldn't find the mother). Kids will definitely pick up on the fact that they are searching and never finding.It just struck me as an odd and uncomfortable story for a mother to read to her child.

We love this book.  Bird mistakes an snow ball for an egg and travels far and wide to find the egg's mother.  The book shows many places and the kids like to think of their own places to go.
