In fact, the metal exterior is too hot to touch upon pouring hot liquid inside. Ironically, the metal exterior is now drawing heat AWAY from the liquid, which makes the tea/coffee inside cool more quickly. I have only hand washed this carafe with soap and water, so I cannot imagine how the seal got broken. Very disappointed--I liked the carafe, but this is far too short a time for a product like this to last. In about 2 hrs, you want to warm your coffee in the microwave, especially if you add cream to your coffee. Also, the lid collects a little coffee in the process of using it so that when you remove the lid and tip it, (as in to refill the or clean the carafe) about 2 tsp of coffee runs out of the top-- usually on the floor unless you pay attention.On the positive side, if you use a Melita cone filter, it rests perfectly on the top while the coffee brews.
