It holds the gaiter tight in place to not allow debris or bugs in your shoes while on a trail hike or running. In addition the material is durable but lightweight for summer use. I was concerned about the strap under my foot, I have some arch issues. The strap does not bother my foot at all, can't even tell it is there. My ankles are too skinny for this product. If there were more Velcro to allow me to tighten it better around my ankle, it would work. Towards the end of July beginning of August we have underground nest of yellow jackets. As soon as the mover disturbs them, they will cling and bite around your ankles.I am not sure this will work.
