It's not smooth like a plate. **Q: What is the Shore Hardness D of this board?** A: Not sure what D means but I use it for leather work with ultra sharp tools and for hole punching with a 2 ton press and it is holding up very well. I would say it is as hard as my commercial grade boards. **Q: will it melt from high heat?** A: This product is made from polypropylene.
