One simple example: the section "Determining what template a document is using" seems like a pretty simple task. In the listed 2nd step of what we are suppose to do, it says to click on "Advanced Properties" [pg. 290]. Well, my copy of Word 2016 - brought in June 2017 - doesn't have an "Advanced Properties" to click on. So, you are left guessing what to do which can be very time consuming and sometimes it can lead to complete failure after a huge expenditure of time. It could be that Microsoft has changed Word since the book was published, I don't know. All I know is that what is in the book and what exists in reality are not the same all too often.On the other hand, there is a lot of detail in this book that is useful sometimes and that is missing in most other books. . So, it's kind of hit and miss. Sort of like Microsoft products themselves. The fact that to work with Tables in Word 2016 you have to jump around four different tabs (Home, Insert, Design, Layout), each with their own subset of Table manipulation commands, instead of having all the table commands co-located is crazy and just makes everything more difficult. Given the illogical way Microsoft has designed the software, any author that tries to be comprehensive about Word 2016 has a huge uphill struggle on their hands. Given the difficulty of the inherent illogic of the software, I gave this book three stars for at least doing as well as they have done.There is a web version of this book that presumably has updates. I have not used it. Why? I have a life. This book is almost a thousand pages. Do I really want to complicate my life even more by doubling that page count so that anything I read in the hard copy book I have to assume there might be a different web version of the same paragraph or chapter? Like I said, I have a life.Sept 14, 2017 - As I come across more examples of where this book and Word 2016 diverge, I knocked the star count from three to one. There is simply wrong information in this book. One example would be where templates are located. This is necessary to navigate to if you want to change a template. They are not located using the path instructions from this book. The usefulness of this book has to be taken with a huge grain of salt. At least half the time I have to go to the web and search for the instructions I need to accomplish some task using Word 2016. It is easy to find what feature you want to use. So not finished yet but have read and processed enough to evaluate. I used to treat tech books strictly as reference and would only use them as prompts to brush up on a technique I had not used recently. But some time back I started reading the entire book and noting those areas that would be useful to me in the future even if currently not used. I must confess that Word is a much deeper application than I realized. I read a section every day so as not to get too overwhelmed. The writing is clear and the screenshots easy to follow.The only addition I would wish for would be downloadable data for charts and merge fields to facilitate working in those areas. For those of us that don't generate a professional level of input, that would be useful.
