I had a pool for skimming etc but it doesnt fit. Annoying that the product site doesnt tie in with a pole purchase.** A: I purchased this last year and it fits in the pole I use for skimming- I also bolted this to the pole. If I actually had to pull someone out of the pool the plastic piece wouldnt be something i would bet someones life on **Q: Does this need additional tools in order to attach to a telescopic pole?** A: I purchased this for my son. He will be moving into a cabin built on a pond. He hasn't put it together with the pole yet. This hook is not meant for a telescopic (is stated in hook description)pole. I bought him a 20' pole on another site. I was concerned when I read reviews that telescopic poles retrack at times. I have granddaughters and worry about the pond which is 25-30' deep. **Q: Does the life hook come with the pole?** A: No, you have to buy a telescoping pole separately. It is just like the one you probably already have attached to either a net or an under-water vacuum. A pool supply store will certainly sell them, probably for around $35. You should buy one and make it a designated pole for this job only. Otherwise you risk its being attached to the vacuum or net at the moment of crisis and it will take you 3 minutes to disengage it from the one pole and reattach it to the hook. In those 3 minutes a child could drown. While you are thinking about pool safety, you might also pick up a genuine cork, round, certified life preserver with grab-on rope securely fastened around the perimeter. Keep it in a dedicated place right near the water so that you can easily grab it and throw it toward the struggling swimmer. Forbid the kids from using it as a swimming toy. This life preserver must always be in its designated location so there will be no delay while you hunt it up. You might also invest in a couple of signs, that you can post poolside that say: "Shallow water. No Diving." They hopefully will further protect the kids, and will help you defend a lawsuit. And remove the diving board. There are many, many cases annually in the USA of broken necks (with resultant total paralysis) from teenage males diving too deeply in water only 8 feet deep. Finally, when a person drowns, often the heart goes in to a soon-to-be-fatal rhythm which can often be converted back to a normal heart rhythm, but only if you have a defibrillator on the scene. You can buy one for use in and around the home for $1100 (Google "A.E.D."). Any adult (including those with zero medical training) can learn in one hour how to use it effectively and safely. It can get your child's heart pumping again in 2 minutes, before the brain begins to be permanently damaged at 4 minutes. The EMTs will arrive, in response to your 911 call, in 6 to 25 minutes depending on local situations, often too late to prevent brain damage even if the child's life is saved. All pool owners should plan to have all of these precautions readily available poolside.
