And he's certainly no stranger to dumb thuggery on his much-anticipated debut. But unlike Tupac, who tempered hard-core beatdowns with party pick-me-ups, DMX is strictly business, part of a street reaction against the Puff Daddy-fueled, late-1990s slew of lightweight pop-rap crossovers. With a name too true for its own good, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot could occasionally use a cool breeze of levity. That said, the record is not without merit; despite the album's largely standard-issue beats and rhymes, both DMX's forceful voice and solid production have moments of greatness. At times DMX even manages to squeeze memorable hooks out of this otherwise claustrophobic release. --Roni Sarig With his raw energy and dark sex appeal, DMX (or Dark Man X, or Dark Man of the Unknown as he is often called) is headed for the stars - and beyond. The 21-year-old Yonkers native has been a lyricist for years; his creative flow, combined with his raspy voice and electric rhyme style is particularly fresh and innovative. His 1st single, "Get at Me Dog," has already become NY's anthem for the streets, and the "buzz" is expected to quickly intensify to a roar. It's Dark and Hell Is Hot is a psychotic concept album that celebrates bloody style over creative substance.... While the often rough minimalistic beats can be infectious, they still don't mask the fact that his lyrics are often plain ugly. -- Spin Review: Collectible item - Collectible item Review: One of Rap's most intense debuts - When this first came out, I was in middle school and only heard songs like "Ruff Ryders Anthem" and "Get At Me Dog" and liked the songs alot, but I had no idea how deep this album really was at that time. On this album, DMX basically talks about how he lived from an early age and how he survived up to the point of catching a break in the rap industry. This guy is bi-polar and was homeless from age 8 until he caught a break (exact age might be wrong); he had to steal and rob to stay alive on the streets. This guy had it really, really hard and it shows in his lyrics and even in his voice on some songs. What I took away from this album is DMX's inner struggle that seemed to consume him and trouble him so much. He raps about killing people and sounds extremely angry on some tracks, but it sounds like venting frustration once you've heard the whole album through. This is him before he got famous, laying out part 1 of his early years (part 2 would be "Flesh of my Blood"). Anyway, the bottom line is this CD has a couple of skits that don't need to be there and about 2 songs that are average; overall though, this is one of the most personal, deep, and emotional rap albums I've heard since 2Pac (not that DMX should be compared to 2Pac or be held to 2Pac's standards). Buy this. ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B000006O62 | | Best Sellers Rank | #2,875 in CDs & Vinyl ( See Top 100 in CDs & Vinyl ) #23 in East Coast Rap #28 in Gangsta & Hardcore Rap & Hip-Hop #65 in Pop Rap (CDs & Vinyl) | | Customer Reviews | 4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars (1,344) | | Date First Available | December 7, 2006 | | Item model number | 2140718 | | Label | Def Jam Recordings | | Language | English | | Manufacturer | Def Jam Recordings | | Number of discs | 1 | | Original Release Date | 1998 | | Product Dimensions | 4.88 x 5.59 x 0.47 inches; 3.88 ounces | | SPARS Code | DDD | ## Images ![It's Dark And Hell Is Hot - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81EBmsbXeQL.jpg) ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Collectible item *by C***L on July 13, 2026* Collectible item ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of Rap's most intense debuts *by S***W on January 28, 2012* When this first came out, I was in middle school and only heard songs like "Ruff Ryders Anthem" and "Get At Me Dog" and liked the songs alot, but I had no idea how deep this album really was at that time.
