Picked up this book because it was recently turned into a roleplaying game for the Savage Worlds system and I wanted to see what it was all about. The Goon is a fun, crazy setting with tough-guy protagonists, zombie antagonists, and a giant spider who hangs out at the corner bar and plays poker. Picking up the library volume was a good move on my part, and I'm looking forward to getting volume 2 in the future.

I had picked up some Goon stories here and there, but never gotten around to reading the whole series.  When I ordered the volume 1, I didn't expect it to be nearly as big or as beautiful as it turned out to be.  Sure, Mr. Powell repeatedly warns that the early Goon stuff is rough compared to the art down the road, but it's still great fun, and this collection in particular is awesome.  Definitely a bargain at the price, and hey, it can double as a weapon in case you need to defend yourself!

If you're a reader of comics and you're looking for something a little left of center, keep on looking... Cuz Eric Powell's "The Goon" (not to be confused with that hockey movie starring Stifler) is so far left of center, I don't even think center counts as a thing anymore. Great artwork that looks like something you could've seen in an old Dick Tracy comic strip, totally in keeping with the setting and time period, highlights some great tongue in cheek writing. Nothing's off limits, no gag is too gross.
