It works exactly like how you'd think RTV would help boost the seal of a gasket or oring, but instead of making it 10x worse, it actually seals. Its a great dressing, and I'd dare to say, it might be the best sealant you can get for that very reason. I have used this Hylomar gasket to seal MG head gaskets, Cadillac 4100cc intake manifold gaskets, and other really difficult applications. I can't see that a BMW valve cover gasket will pose any problems. Just apply a thin film on both sides of the gasket and close within 10 minutes. The Hylomar never dries out so it doesn't shrink. The secret to valve cover gaskets cork or rubber is to not over tighten the retaining bolts. There is probably an Inch Pound torque spec for your car which you should follow.
