## Overview

The Iman Nagura Stone is a finely crafted, light-colored ultra-fine grit sharpening accessory designed to enhance and maintain Japanese whetstones. Measuring 7/8" square by 3" thick, it activates with water to produce a superior slurry that speeds up polishing and keeps your sharpening stone flat and efficient. Ideal for stones 1000 grit or finer, this durable stone is a must-have for professionals and enthusiasts seeking precision and longevity in blade maintenance.

## Description

How to use: After dripping water to the whetstone, rub the Nagura (which contains the abrasive). Then a good slurry develops and it speeds up the polishing.

Review: A must have for the serious blade sharpener - This should be used only on stones of 1000 grit or finer or it will eat up the Nagura Stone. Use each of the 4 sides equally to maintain its square shape and flatness. Its use is to clean the fine metal particles from a stone after use re-flatten the cutting stone after use and to create the cutting lather needed for fine sharpening. Use it on a wet stone only, as the water will suspend the particles making it easy to clean the stone you are working on with a cloth. If the Nagura Stone chatters when you push it then the stone you are cleaning is too dry or deformed in some way. If dry then wet it, if the stone is deformed then turn the Nagura stone 45 degrees to the work stone and smooth out the rough places. Remember, always clean the entire stone to keep it flat. Most people have a tendency to start cleaning the stone about a 1/4 of the way in and stop or lighten pressure about 1/4 of the way to the end. This will cause the Nagura to create a sway back effect and make the work stone hard to use. A damp cloth is all that is needed to clean the Nagura Stone itself.
Review: Pretty dang nifty... - This item arrived as expected, but what I didn't pick up on from the description was that it is a King Ice Bear stone. It came nicely packed and arrived as expected. It definitely made a difference in the sharpening when I used it with my King 1,000/6,000 combination stone. I'm no expert sharpener, but the slurry it formed stayed on the stone longer than just the water and kept me from having to keep wetting it as often. You could see it pulling the black residue out of the whet stone, which should be helping the stone to cut more efficiently. All in all, nothing too surprising or unexpected, but it just seemed to do exactly what it is supposed to. Can't see any reason to ding it.

## Features

- Nagura stones are used as one of the popular accessories
- for Japanese finer sharpening stones (for example #6000 grit).
- They develop a high-quality slurry and also serve to flatten
- high spots on the surface of sharpener.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can I use this Nagura to flatten my 1000 and 6000 grit stones?**
A: A nagura stone will not be very useful to flatten your whetstone. For that, use either a purpose-built ‘flattening stone’ or a relatively coarse (like 400 grit) diamond stone. I use the latter; the best I’ve found for this is the ‘Atoma’ brand diamond plate, which is heavy and reliably flat, with the abrasive layer bound to a heavy metal backing.

**Q: What grit is this Nagura stone?**
A: It is about 400 judging by the size of the particles under an electronic microscope and comparing those to known grits. The grit of a nagura stone does matter because it adds its own abrasive particles to the waterstone slurry and if nagura and waterstone grits don't match it will affect the quality of the edge, especially for higher grit stones. It is a friction process and this nagura is soft, with a chalk base, and releases its abrasive easily, which adds to the effect of creating a non-uniform slurry. It is best to match the grit of your nagura to the grit of your stones (e.g., 1000 for 1000, 4000 for 4000, 8000 for 8000, etc.).

**Q: I have a set of Japanese whetstones - 400/1000/3000 grit. Can I use this Nagura 8000 grit on them, or do I need an 8000 grit stone for it?**
A: Use the Nagura Stone on the 3000 grit stone to build a slurry for faster cutting - Does not do as well on the 1000 grit stone, and not much at all on the 400 grit - Use the Nagura Stone, 1000 grit stone, 3000 grit stone, and a 8000 grit stone along with a honing angle guide for a shave ready edge.

**Q: Can I use this to clean my Shapton whetstones 1000 and 5000 grit? What is suggested for cleaning lower grit stones?**
A: It is my understanding that this particular Nagura stone is for 8000 grit sharpening stones. Although I have used it for lesser grit stones, that is not what it is recommend for.

Produces a ample slurry with minimum effort. Since I have used no other Nagura stone, I cannot compare to other stones, like Tomo Nagura. I believe this is a synthetic stone and it does work well with the 8K grit Norton and a 12K no name stones that I have.
