So, we have this reaction chain: the alder cones release humid acids to the water the humid acids will lower the hardness and therefore the pH a lower pH reduces the density of bacteria and fungi (it is supposed that acids can pass cell membranes of bacteria easier in a pH ~6 and effect their duplicating and growth) Shrimp like to feed on alder cones - and baby shrimp have a good place to sit and hide. There is no base to this, its just 3 pieces of cholla wood hot glued together in a pleasing arrangement. The order I did was for one and 10 alder cones, there was also a surprise of a small sampling of Premium Veggie Mini Sticks with Calcium. I took one tiny stick and put it in, it floated for 5 seconds then sank to the bottom. A few minutes later it had expanded into quite a nice bit of nom nom for the shrimps. The next time I came back to the tank, a few minutes later, there was a good portion of my colony snacking quite happily on the veggie stuff. I'll probably break the longer sticks in half, so I don't waste any. It expands quite a lot.Very happy with how quickly it shipped. Was told it would be a long time, longer then 2 day normal...but it was here quicker then I could have hoped! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ My shrimp love this! *by M***E on November 25, 2015* Overall I am happy with this purchase. I have a 2.5 gallon Red Cherry Shrimp tank. This was just the right size for that aquarium. I have had to do frequent water changes due to the tannins in the cholla and the alder cones. But my shrimp love it. And my first fry hid in the cholla until recently. I am currently trying to get my java moss to attach. Hopefully it will work. I would purchase this again. Oh, and the order shipped a lot faster than expected. Bonus points for that. Sorry about the picture quality. I have an old phone. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Good product, needs unexpected maintenance *by A***N on June 13, 2016* The driftwood is awesome, the others are not exactly what I expected. Maybe it's my own expectations and not fully understanding the product. The leaves disintegrated within about a month (probably normal? my first experience with almond leaves), and the alder cones won't stay down in the substrate without a lot of effort. I bought these for a tank with RCS and a Betta, and they do add to the natural look I'm going for.
