And then in the light you can actually see layers in the blade like true Damascus steal . It’s a thick blade and dives down to a great edge that you can really work with to get razor sharp. it already has a hair shaving edge on the blade . I could not believe it to get that kinda steal for the price of 80$ Don’t even think about it get this beautiful hand crafted chopper that came from heaven and hell . What is the diameter of the handle at its thickest point?** A: The thickest point is at the butt end or pommel as it kind of widens out into a bulb shape. At that point it's about 1 and 3/8ths inches, give or take. The rest of the handle is a little thinner and is pretty round. Based on your described hand size and mild arthritis, my personal opinion is it would be a little large and heavy for you for all but the shortest length of time. I'm a decent sized male, 6'1", 210lbs and it does get tiring. This parang is heavy, but does a great job. I also have the mini duku parang (also by Condor) it's every bit as well made and almost as capable as the village parang but is lighter and thinner in the handle and I think that would be a better fit for you. I love them both and the mini duku can do just about everything the village can. Best of luck with whatever you choose. **Q: Did it come with a sheath?** A: Yes it does come with a nicely finishes leather sheath. To me Condor put as much quality into sheath also. **Q: Does this item really take 2-5 months to ship?** A: No, this product would ship right away through us **Q: How does one preserve/protect the wood handle? Linseed oil? Tung oil? I've seen reports that the wooden handle can splinter/break.** A: I used multiple (5 or6) coats of Linseed oil. The direction of the grain of the wood will tell you if it's likely to break. Straight grain wood will be less likely to break. I also use Kiwi Conditioning Oil on the sheath. 3 or 4 coats at first and then just when it looks like it needs another coat. Comes shipped reasonably sharp (about the sharpness of a new axe or hatchet). Only takes a few minutes to make scary sharp. Given the normal use of a knife like this it will take work to keep it super sharp vs the more blunted sharpness it ships with. To capture the weight and thickness of the blade imagine a lawn mower blade ground to a sharp edge and adding a nice wood handle. The additional weight may be a minus for some but I find it really makes for powerful cut that will go through some pretty thick saplings. I like the more rustic nothing fancy look of this knife. Holding it in my hand it feels like a very functional tool with no unnecessary frills that with care will last generations with proper care (clean it off and oil it when you are done, sharpen it when it eventually dulls). Very nice leather sheath that comes with this. I like the swivel belt loop. Great for carrying around in the woods.
